Summary
Turnabout centred on a single comic premise involving a married couple who unexpectedly exchange identities. Sam Alston, a traditionally macho sportswriter, and his wife Penny, an executive at a cosmetics firm, become entangled in the consequences of Penny’s impulsive purchase of a Buddha statue from a gypsy who claimed it possessed supernatural powers. The statue proves genuinely magical, granting their offhand wish to “change places” by transferring Sam’s consciousness into Penny’s body and Penny’s consciousness into Sam’s.
However, the statue does not grant their subsequent wish to return to normal, leaving the couple to navigate each other’s daily routines while attempting to maintain the appearance of ordinary life. Their efforts to conceal the switch are complicated further by the persistent curiosity of their neighbours, the Overmeyers, whose nosiness makes preserving the secret an ongoing challenge.
