Summary

The series centres on an aspiring angel who, for reasons left unexplained, is unable to enter heaven and is instead assigned to guide individuals who have died prematurely. Each episode features a different guest star portraying the recently deceased, who is granted the opportunity to revisit a critical moment in their past in order to correct a misjudgement or harmful decision. The regular cast appears in supporting roles, while the narrative focus shifts from week to week, giving the programme the structure of an anthology.

Episodes revolve around a person who has reached the end of their life in one timeline and, following deliberation by their advocate and judge, is granted three days to travel back into their own past. Without revealing their true identity, they must persuade their younger self to make a different choice at a pivotal juncture, such as abandoning a destructive habit or pursuing an alternative career path. In doing so, they are expected to learn a moral or personal lesson that will allow them to become a better version of themselves. This format enabled the series to explore a wide range of settings, characters, and circumstances.

Season one featured Gordie Brown as the advocate Mr. Jones, while Paul Popowich assumed the role of advocate Mr. Smith in season two. Al Waxman portrayed Judge Othniel in forty of the forty‑four episodes; in season one he also appeared as Judge Jephtah in two episodes, and Polly Bergen played Judge Deborah in two others. Waxman died during heart surgery on 18 January 2001, while the second season was still in broadcast.
