Summary
Daniel McCarthy, a gifted artist and mathematician, participates in an experimental programme devoted to advanced brain‑mapping techniques and subsequently begins to experience enigmatic visual phenomena that he interprets as premonitions of future events. His continued involvement in the research over several years deepens his fixation on deciphering these images, a preoccupation that strains his personal life and ultimately leads to the dissolution of his marriage. As the visions appear to coalesce into indications of an impending global crisis, McCarthy’s efforts evolve into an obsessive attempt to assemble a coherent pattern from the fragments he perceives.
More than a decade later, after navigating multiple international upheavals, he emerges as the leader of a dissident organisation known as the Strawman Underground. Travelling across continents, McCarthy directs the group’s efforts to counter a network of conspirators whose ambitions threaten to impose comprehensive control over the world’s population, using his accumulated insights to anticipate and obstruct their plans.
