Summary
Ultraman is depicted as a benevolent alien from the Land of Light who travels three million light‑years from Nebula M‑78 to aid humanity in its struggle against giant monsters. His mission is jeopardised at the outset when he accidentally collides with an aircraft piloted by the well‑intentioned Earthman Hayata (Kurobe). To preserve Hayata’s life, Ultraman merges with the dying pilot, creating a symbiotic being that retains Hayata’s consciousness while allowing Ultraman to remain dormant within him, protected from Earth’s atmosphere, which would otherwise be fatal to the alien.
Hayata becomes a member of the Science Special Investigation Team, an organisation dedicated to safeguarding Earth from scientific and environmental threats. The team consists of Captain Muramatsu (Kobayashi), marksman Arashi (Ishii), and communications officer Akiko (Sakurai). When confronted with life‑threatening situations, Hayata secretly activates the Beta Capsule, transforming into Ultraman, a forty‑metre‑tall silver‑and‑red giant capable of battling city‑destroying monsters directly. Ultraman employs a range of abilities, most notably the Specium Ray and Ultra Slash, to defeat these adversaries.
However, Ultraman’s transformation exposes him to the harsh conditions of Earth, prompting the development of a blue, three‑minute Colour Timer embedded in his chest. Once activated, the timer gradually shifts to red and begins to flash, signalling that Ultraman’s safe operating period is nearing its end. He must then conclude the battle swiftly or risk severe injury and death.
