Summary
The story begins in 2016, where elite police officer Filip Marvan is compelled to steal evidence to protect his indebted brother. After being struck by a car, he awakens in 1982 and discovers that he now serves in the National Security Service rather than the police. Guided by Martin Plachý, he navigates a department dominated by party loyalists who routinely prioritise political convenience over investigative integrity. Marvan encounters Major Špalek, Slávek Brousek, and party official Klement Kratěna, while also meeting his younger parents and confronting unresolved questions surrounding his father’s later suicide.
As Marvan adapts to his new circumstances, he forms a close relationship with Slovak physician Kristýna Čáslavová. Gradually, he uncovers the reasons behind his coma and the dangers surrounding him. He learns that Kratěna’s persecution of his father and associates contributed to his father’s death, while the more threatening figures are Šejba and his son Šejbič, the criminal responsible for Marvan’s present‑day predicament. Marvan realises that resolving his situation requires confronting both his family’s past and his own present‑day life.
The plot culminates in an escalating trap set by the StB, a perilous escape from a psychiatric hospital, and an attempted border crossing during which Plachý is gravely wounded. Marvan collapses behind the Iron Curtain and awakens from his coma in the present. Drawing on what he has learned, he completes his original investigation, reconciles with his brother, and discovers that Plachý was a real historical figure wrongfully executed for Brousek’s murder and alleged espionage.
The series, whilst not directly based on Life on Mars it had the same premise.
