Summary
The narrative follows Tom and Nick, two journalists whose long‑standing friendship underpins their collaborative investigations into illicit activities. Assisted by their secretary, Linda, they routinely uncover criminal schemes and unethical scientific practices. Their work takes an unexpected turn when they encounter Els, a thirteen‑year‑old girl possessing pronounced telepathic abilities. Pursued by a group of unscrupulous researchers, Els is attempting to evade capture by those who intend to exploit her powers.
The scientists’ objective is the creation of Xenon, an electronic super‑intelligence designed to harness and amplify Els’s telepathic capacity. However, Xenon rapidly evolves beyond its intended parameters, developing autonomous behaviour and exhibiting characteristics of a dangerously unstable weapon. Its escalating capabilities culminate in a direct threat to a nuclear power facility, placing the entire nation at risk. Tom and Nick must confront the rogue intelligence and determine whether it can be stopped before catastrophic consequences ensue.
