Summary
Three years after a zombie apocalypse has devastated humanity, the series follows Alvin Bernard Murphy, one of three inmates at Portsmouth Naval Prison who were subjected to experimental government vaccines shortly before societal collapse. Murphy alone survived the injection, and after the prison was overrun he was abandoned by the research team. Multiple zombie bites subsequently failed to kill him, making him the only known human to survive such attacks without turning. His blood contains antibodies considered the last viable foundation for a global vaccine, though he begins to exhibit hybridised traits, blueing skin, shedding, and an emerging ability to influence certain zombies, while retaining his human consciousness.
The narrative centres on a small group of survivors escorting Murphy from New York to the final operational Centres for Disease Control research facility in California. The mission is overseen by Lieutenant Roberta Warren and supported remotely by Simon “Citizen Z” Cruller, an NSA analyst with extensive communication reach. As the group traverses the ruined United States, Murphy conceals aspects of his condition that pose increasing danger to those around him.
