== Summary ==

''Stranger Things'' is set during the ''1980s'', primarily in the fictional rural town of ''Hawkins, Indiana'', frequently characterised as "the town where nothing ever happens." The nearby ''Hawkins National Laboratory'', outwardly engaged in scientific research for the ''United States Department of Energy'', conducts covert experiments involving ''paranormal'' and ''supernatural'' phenomena, including trials using human subjects. These activities inadvertently open a ''portal'' to an alternate dimension known as the ''Upside Down'', whose influence begins to manifest in a series of unusual and increasingly disruptive events affecting the residents of Hawkins.
