Summary
Stranger Things is set during the 1980s, primarily in the fictional rural town of Hawkins, Indiana, frequently characterised as "the town where nothing ever happens." The nearby Hawkins National Laboratory, outwardly engaged in scientific research for the United States Department of Energy, conducts covert experiments involving paranormal and supernatural phenomena, including trials using human subjects. These activities inadvertently open a portal to an alternate dimension known as the Upside Down, whose influence begins to manifest in a series of unusual and increasingly disruptive events affecting the residents of Hawkins.
