Summary
Set in the year 2049 AD, the narrative depicts a future in which technological innovation has accelerated dramatically while human behaviour and social development remain fundamentally unchanged. Against this backdrop, society faces a profound test of the relationship between human nature and advanced technology. Central to this tension is Stable, a mind‑reading device designed to prolong emotional well‑being by stabilising and enhancing positive mental states. Yet despite its sophistication, Stable is unable to quantify or interpret the depth of human affection, underscoring the limits of technological intervention in matters of emotion and personal connection.
The story explores the contrast between humanity’s reliance on increasingly intrusive technologies and the enduring complexity of inner life, raising questions about the boundaries of scientific capability and the aspects of human experience that remain beyond measurement.
