Summary

Chinese astrophysicist Ye Wenjie becomes entangled with state authorities after witnessing her father’s death during a Cultural Revolution struggle session. Owing to her scientific expertise, she is assigned to a covert military installation engaged in a Cold War-era effort to achieve first contact with extra-terrestrial intelligence before rival nations. During her tenure at the base, Ye makes a consequential decision that will shape the long‑term trajectory of humanity.

In present‑day London, a sequence of unexplained suicides and anomalous scientific phenomena draws the attention of a government investigator. Parallel to this, a close‑knit group of friends known as the Oxford Five becomes involved in the unfolding mystery, gradually uncovering evidence that the events are linked to an extra-terrestrial origin.
