Summary

In 2007, Wang Miao, a leading Chinese specialist in nanomaterials, becomes involved in an investigation led by Shi Qiang, a counterterrorism detective examining a series of unexplained suicides within the scientific community. Their inquiry brings them into contact with a secretive organisation known as The Frontiers of Science, whose activities appear to be connected to the deaths.

As Wang and Shi probe deeper, they uncover links between the organisation and a widely played virtual‑reality game that depicts an extra-terrestrial civilisation. The investigation gradually reveals that the game’s fictional world is intertwined with a genuine alien presence and that its narrative bears directly on the future of humanity on Earth. The unfolding events position Wang at the centre of a larger conflict involving scientific discovery, existential threat, and the fate of civilisation.
