Summary

An ambitious sequel to Superman (1948), the serial introduced the hero’s principal adversary, Lex Luthor, portrayed by Lyle Talbot, as the titular “Atom Man.” Armed with synthetic kryptonite, Luthor temporarily incapacitates Superman (Kirk Alyn) while directing his criminal network to terrorise Metropolis. Once Superman regains his strength, Luthor escalates his campaign by abducting Lois Lane (Noel Neill) and launching her into outer space. Talbot’s performance as Luthor is widely regarded as overshadowing Alyn’s portrayal of the Man of Steel, before the villain ultimately meets his downfall and is imprisoned.
