Summary
Humanity was once divided into twelve colonial tribes, locked in a thousand‑year conflict with the robotic Cylon Empire. After finally uniting and achieving a fragile peace, the Colonies are struck by a sudden and catastrophic Cylon offensive. The Twelve Worlds are devastated, and the remnants of the human race gather in desperation around the last surviving battlestar, Galactica.
Commanded by Commander Adama, now the sole surviving member of the government, the Galactica becomes the centre of a refugee fleet of more than 220 civilian and military vessels. Together, they embark on a perilous journey to locate the legendary Thirteenth Tribe of Man, said to reside on a distant world known as Earth.
The Cylons, however, have no intention of allowing the fleet to escape. They pursue the Galactica relentlessly across the galaxy.
Among the key members of the crew are Captain Apollo, commander of the elite Viper fighter squadron and Adama’s eldest son; Lieutenant Starbuck, a gifted but impulsive pilot with a weakness for gambling; and Athena, Adama’s daughter, who oversees fleet communications. Cassiopeia, with whom Starbuck is infatuated, also plays a prominent role, as does Colonel Tigh, Adama’s trusted executive officer.
Other notable figures include Lieutenant Boomer, another Viper pilot frequently drawn into Starbuck’s schemes, and Boxey, Apollo’s young son, accompanied by his overly enthusiastic robotic daggit. Opposing the fleet is Count Baltar, a human who has betrayed his own species and now serves the Cylons.
