Summary
Blue Thunder centres on a highly advanced, five‑million‑dollar LAPD helicopter engineered for urban counter‑insurgency operations. The aircraft is heavily armoured with one‑inch plating and equipped with a forward‑mounted 20 mm electric cannon capable of firing 4,000 rounds per minute. Before the system can be deployed within Los Angeles, police pilot Frank Murphy (Roy Scheider) is selected for specialised training, despite longstanding tensions with the project’s test pilot, a rival from his Vietnam service.
As Murphy familiarises himself with the aircraft, he becomes increasingly convinced that Blue Thunder’s stated purpose is incomplete. His suspicions are confirmed when he uncovers a covert government initiative, Project THOR (Tactical Helicopter Offensive Response), which intends to use the helicopter for unconstitutional surveillance and crowd‑control operations. Realising he may be the only person capable of exposing the programme, Murphy is forced into direct conflict with those seeking to weaponize Blue Thunder for political ends.
