Summary
In Milan in 2030, eight years after the independent global intelligence agency Citadel was dismantled by the powerful syndicate Manticore, former Citadel operative Diana Cavalieri remains embedded deep within enemy territory. Operating as a covert mole inside Manticore’s Italian branch, she has survived by maintaining her cover while navigating the organisation’s internal rivalries and escalating suspicion. Her isolation underscores the collapse of Citadel’s network and the extent of Manticore’s dominance across Europe.
When Diana finally identifies a narrow opportunity to escape and disappear permanently, her only viable path requires placing her trust in an unlikely ally: Edo Zani, heir to Manticore Italy and son of Ettore Zani, the faction’s ambitious leader. Ettore is locked in a struggle for supremacy against competing European Manticore families, creating fractures within the syndicate that Diana hopes to exploit. Edo’s position within this volatile hierarchy offers her a chance at freedom, but accepting his help forces her to rely on someone raised within the very organisation that destroyed Citadel.
Diana’s attempt to break free becomes entangled with Manticore’s internal power contest, Citadel’s lingering shadow, and the uncertain loyalties of the Zani family. Her alliance with Edo marks a pivotal turning point, setting the stage for a confrontation between the remnants of Citadel and the fractured but still formidable Manticore network.
