Summary
The series chronicles the investigations of Damon Dark, an operative of Department Six, a covert intelligence division publicly described as handling “fringe cases.” This designation serves as a deliberate smokescreen: the true mandate of Department Six is the identification and containment of extraterrestrial incursions on Earth.
In the original television run, the alien threat remains unseen, exerting its influence through human intermediaries such as Simon Maddox, a corporate magnate whose role evokes the manipulative industrialist Tobias Vaughn from the Doctor Who serial The Invasion. As the narrative progresses, Damon encounters increasingly overt manifestations of the alien presence, including a shape‑shifting entity, a disembodied force known as Zaygor, and a human operative, Gary Sutton, who is repeatedly duplicated through alien intervention.
Zaygor’s species is later revealed to inhabit vast pyramidal structures on a world within the Cygnus system, and ultimately identified as The Collective, a hive‑like intelligence operating across multiple forms. The tie‑in novel Biodome expands the mythology further, introducing a one‑eyed creature originating from Venus and parasitic organisms capable of attaching to human hosts and exerting total mental control. Its final chapter implies that the Venusian entities possess mind‑swapping abilities and that their monstrous physical forms may themselves be host bodies for the Collective.
