Summary

The story unfolds through the perspective of former Triffid farmer Bill Masen (portrayed by John Duttine, who had recently gained prominence on the BBC for his leading role in To Serve Them All Days). Masen begins the narrative confined to a hospital ward, his eyes bandaged after narrowly avoiding a Triffid sting. As he waits to learn whether his sight has been saved, a spectacular celestial display, widely regarded as a dazzling cosmetic phenomenon, appears in the night sky, blinding millions who watch it.

Masen awakens the next morning to discover that he is among the few sighted individuals left in a world suddenly plunged into blindness, panic, and social collapse. As the Triffids begin to roam freely through the streets, he rescues a young woman, Jo, from an attack and the two set out in search of other survivors capable of resisting the growing threat.

Complicating their struggle is a gang of blind scavengers led by Jack Coker, whose coercive tactics pose an additional danger. Ultimately, Masen, Jo, and a small group of allies find refuge in a farmhouse in Sussex, where they prepare for a final confrontation with the advancing Triffids.
