Summary

Karl and David Scott, two teenage half‑brothers, survive the crash of their father Frank Scott’s private aircraft and arrive on an uncharted island. They are informed by local resident Cyrus Crabb that the location is Dinotopia, an isolated society in which humans and dinosaurs coexist. The brothers are introduced to a settlement characterised by cultural elements from multiple historical periods and to Marion Waldo, a Dinotopian citizen trained in dinosaur care and mediation.

During transport to Waterfall City, evidence of coordinated Tyrannosaurus activity is identified, including the destruction of a nearby village. A subsequent attack is repelled by a unit of Skybax riders, led by Oonu, who escort the group to safety.

Dinotopia includes several sentient dinosaur species, notably Zipeau, a Stenonychosaurus capable of articulate speech. The society maintains a prohibition on the departure of outsiders. David Scott adapts to local customs, whereas Karl Scott exhibits resistance due to the presumed death of his father and perceived indifference from Dinotopian residents.

Marion Waldo is undergoing preparation for future leadership responsibilities within Dinotopian governance. Local tradition references an ancient subterranean region illuminated by sunstones, which are experiencing unexplained failures associated with increased dinosaur aggression. Concurrently, Cyrus Crabb engages in the theft of cultural artefacts in an attempt to escape the island. Zipeau discovers the activity but is attacked and incapacitated.

Karl Scott locates a dinosaur egg and is assigned an independent task, while David Scott is required to address personal psychological challenges. The combination of malfunctioning sunstones, heightened carnivore activity, and Crabb’s actions presents a significant threat to the stability of Dinotopia.
