Summary
In the 11th millennium, Emperor Shaddam IV of the Galactic Empire seeks to eliminate his political rival, Prince Leto Atreides, by granting him stewardship of the desert world Arrakis, also known as Dune. Shaddam knows full well that the planet’s current ruler, Baron Harkonnen, will never relinquish it peacefully. Arrakis is the sole source of the precious spice melange, a substance created by the planet’s colossal sandworms and prized throughout the Empire for its extraordinary mental‑enhancing properties. As expected, the Baron soon launches a devastating assault, ambushing Leto and annihilating his forces.
Leto’s concubine Jessica, a trained adept of the clairvoyant Bene Gesserit order, escapes into the deep desert with her son Paul. After a perilous journey they encounter the Fremen, the long‑oppressed native people of Arrakis. Impressed by Paul’s emerging prescient abilities, the Fremen leader Stilgar offers them sanctuary. Before long, the tribe becomes convinced that Paul is the long‑foretold messianic figure of their prophecies, and Stilgar begins preparing him for his destined role. As Paul learns the harsh disciplines of desert survival, he falls in love with the young Fremen woman Chani, who later bears him a son.
Over the following years, Paul leads the Fremen in a relentless guerrilla campaign against the Harkonnen occupiers, inflicting severe losses and, most critically, sabotaging spice production. This disruption draws Emperor Shaddam IV to Arrakis, alarmed that the foundation of his imperial power is under threat. The Fremen rebels launch a final assault to break the imperial forces, and after a brutal battle that costs Shaddam nearly all his troops, the Emperor is compelled to accept defeat.
