Summary

Barry Allen, a forensic scientist employed in the crime laboratory of the Central City Police Department, maintained the civilian identity of The Flash. Coming from a long line of police officers, his father and brother both served as uniformed patrolmen, Barry often felt that his analytical contributions were undervalued by his family, who regarded traditional police work as more meaningful.

While working late in the laboratory, Barry was struck by a bolt of lightning that shattered a nearby shelf of chemicals, drenching him in the resulting mixture. He survived the accident but soon discovered that the chemical‑lightning combination had accelerated his metabolic processes to extraordinary levels, granting him the ability to move at speeds beyond human perception. The transformation also produced an unintended side effect: an insatiable appetite driven by his heightened metabolism.

Seeking a way to reverse or stabilise these changes, Barry consulted Tina McGee, a scientist at S.T.A.R. Labs. Although no cure could be found, Tina assisted him in learning to control and regulate his superhuman speed. Barry ultimately chose to use his abilities for crime‑fighting after his brother was killed in the line of duty, adopting the costumed persona of the Flash.
