Summary

Haru (Santamaria) is an adult with the cognitive abilities of a child. Long mocked in his neighbourhood, he remains cheerful and largely unaware of the ridicule. He is devoted to Erina (Kanno), a teacher at a local centre for the disabled who cares for him like a younger brother. When colleagues at an experimental laboratory request a test subject, Erina persuades Haru to volunteer.

Matched against a super‑intelligent mouse named Algernon in a series of trials, Haru later undergoes surgery designed to enhance his mental capacity. Within days, his IQ rises from 68 to 150. Experiencing full adult cognition for the first time, he quickly wins Erina’s admiration, leaving her torn between her long‑term boyfriend and her growing feelings for her former pupil.

Haru remains attached to Algernon, but soon notices the mouse’s intelligence beginning to decline. Realising the same fate may await him, he struggles desperately to hold on to his newfound abilities and the life he has only just begun to understand.
