Summary
Christopher Chance, known as the Human Target, was a specialist operative who assumed the identities of individuals facing imminent threats to their lives. By impersonating his clients, he acted as a decoy until he could identify and neutralise the person attempting to harm them. A veteran of the Vietnam War and a former member of the Special Forces, Chance operated from a technologically advanced aircraft known as the Blackwing.
Chance and his team provided protection services for a fee equivalent to ten per cent of the client’s annual income, provided the client was not themselves engaged in criminal activity. His operational team comprised Jeff Carlyle, the Blackwing’s pilot; Philo Marsden, a former film special‑effects artist responsible for developing the sophisticated masking technology that enabled Chance to replicate a client’s appearance; and Libby Page, a communications and computer systems expert.
To prepare for an assignment, Chance studied the client’s personal history, behavioural patterns, and vocal characteristics. Marsden then produced a highly accurate mask, allowing Chance to impersonate the individual while undercover. During these missions, the real client remained aboard the Blackwing to avoid the risk of two identical individuals being seen simultaneously. Once the threat was eliminated and the mission concluded, the client resumed their normal life.
