Summary
Set more than five centuries in the future, The Interpretaris depicts Earth as the centre of a peaceful interplanetary federation governed by the World Council. The title refers to the Council’s flagship spacecraft, Interpretaris. The serial opens with the trial of Parta Beno, a rogue scientist found guilty of abducting inhabitants from multiple planets and reducing them in size.
As punishment, he is exiled to a remote asteroid equipped only with a rudimentary laboratory. The Council repatriates all known specimens to their home worlds, but several remain unidentifiable. The crew of Interpretaris is tasked with returning these remaining aliens to their planets of origin.
The mission is led by Commander Alan De Breck, a European portrayed by Stanley Walsh. He is joined by pilot David Charmichael, an Australian played by Kit Taylor, who had appeared a decade earlier as a child actor in The Adventures of Long John Silver, and Vera Balovna, a Russian crew member played by Lorraine Bayly, later well known for her role as Grace Sullivan in The Sullivans. Early episodes address themes of gender equality, with Vera openly aspiring to command the mission.
The crew is supported by Henry, a “computeroid” with artificial intelligence and near‑human emotional responses, operated by Gordon Mutch. A second sentient computer, Alys, appears as a mantelpiece‑clock‑like device voiced by Judi Farr, later known for roles in My Name’s McGooley , What’s Yours?, Rita and Wally, and Kingswood Country. Alys is one of Parta Beno’s unreturned specimens and secretly acts as his agent aboard the ship. From his asteroid exile, Beno, played by Ben Gabriel, controls Alys remotely and repeatedly attempts to sabotage the Interpretaris mission.
