Summary
Born from a stone imbued with the Five Elements, Sun Wukong masters the Tao, the seventy‑two transformations, advanced combat, and multiple paths to immortality, eventually styling himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. His growing power leads to a rebellion against Heaven, after which the Buddha imprisons him beneath a mountain for five centuries.
Concerned with moral decline in the South, the Buddha instructs Guanyin to find a pilgrim in Tang China to retrieve sacred Buddhist scriptures from India. She selects the monk Chen Xuanzang, later granted the name Tang Sanzang by Emperor Taizong.
Tang Sanzang releases Sun Wukong and, with Guanyin’s magical headband to restrain him, continues westward. Along the route he gains three additional disciples: Bai Long, the White Dragon Horse; Zhu Bajie, subdued at Gao Laozhuang; and Sha Wujing, encountered at the Liusha River. Together, the four pilgrims journey to India in search of the Buddhist sutras.
