Summary
Land of the Lost chronicles the experiences of the Marshall family, father Rick Marshall and his teenage children Will and Nolly, who are transported to a prehistoric parallel world after an earthquake opens a fissure beneath their raft during a camping trip. The family finds themselves in a primeval landscape populated by dinosaurs, dragon‑like creatures and a variety of anomalous phenomena.
The Marshalls’ principal concerns are survival and the pursuit of a means to return home. Among the inhabitants of this realm are two semi‑intelligent bipedal species: the Pacuni and the Sleestak. The Pacuni, resembling an evolutionary intermediary between humans and apes, are generally benign though prone to mischief; one young Pacuni, Cha‑Ka, becomes an ally of the Marshalls. The Sleestak, by contrast, are hostile, reptilian humanoids who inhabit the ruins of an ancient city and frequently menace the family.
An atypical Sleestak named Enik befriends the Marshalls. A time‑traveller stranded in the present era of his species, Enik had constructed a temporal device to study Sleestak origins but became marooned when the machine malfunctioned.
The environment known as the Land of the Lost is regulated by mysterious structures called pylons, each powered by crystalline matrices. Interference with a pylon’s operation can destabilise the physical laws governing the region, producing unpredictable and often dangerous effects.
