Summary
Detective Sam Tyler of the NYPD’s 125th Precinct becomes the subject of a temporal dislocation after a 2008 accident, awakening in 1973 with period‑accurate identity documents, equipment, and colleagues who believe he is a transfer from Hyde. As he adapts to the policing culture of the era, Tyler confronts earlier versions of his 2008 cases, uncovers formative elements of his own past, and experiences recurring intrusions from his original reality.
His future knowledge, surreal visions, and anachronistic encounters mark him as eccentric but do not prevent his integration into the squad. The series concludes with the revelation that both 2008 and 1973 are virtual constructs generated by the computer of the spacecraft Hyde 125, carrying Tyler and his colleagues on a 2035 mission to Mars. The precinct, its personnel, and Tyler’s experiences are shown to be components of a neural‑stimulation program disrupted by a meteor‑induced malfunction, culminating in an ambiguous final image that destabilises the apparent resolution.
