Summary
Against the backdrop of severe global overpopulation, the United States initiates a programme of extra-terrestrial colonisation. Central to this effort is the Jupiter 2, a saucer‑shaped spacecraft undergoing final launch preparations. Its mission is to transport a single family on a five‑and‑a‑half‑year voyage to an Earth‑like planet orbiting Alpha Centauri.
The narrative centres on the Robinson family: Professor John Robinson (Guy Williams), his wife Maureen (June Lockhart), and their three children , Judy (Marta Kristen), Penny (Angela Cartwright), and Will (Bill Mumy). They are accompanied by Major Donald West (Mark Goddard) of the U.S. Space Corps. All six travellers are to be placed in cryogenic suspension for the duration of the interstellar journey, scheduled to be revived upon approach to their destination.
The launch operation is overseen by Alpha Control, within which physician Dr. Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris) secretly serves as a saboteur for an unidentified foreign power, communicating under the code designation Aeolis‑14‑Umbra. After eliminating a guard who discovers him aboard the spacecraft, Smith reprograms the Jupiter 2’s B‑9 environmental control robot (Bob May; voice by Dick Tufeld) to destroy essential systems eight hours after launch. Smith’s plan collapses when he inadvertently becomes trapped on board, and his unexpected presence alters the ship’s mass, throwing the Jupiter 2 off course shortly after lift-off. The resulting trajectory leads the vessel into an asteroid field, and the robot’s programmed rampage further destabilises the craft, triggering an unintended hyperdrive activation. The expedition is consequently propelled far beyond its intended route, leaving the crew hopelessly lost in the uncharted reaches of deep space.
