Summary
The Man in the High Castle is set in 1962 in an alternate history where the Axis powers won the Second World War. Following the assassination of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933, Germany and Japan defeat the United States, with the Germans destroying Washington, D.C. with a nuclear weapon and the Japanese invading the West Coast. By the early 1960s, the German Reich controls Europe, Africa, and the eastern half of North America, while the Empire of Japan governs Asia, Oceania, and the western United States. The Rocky Mountains form a Neutral Zone between the two rival empires.
Western North America becomes the Japanese Pacific States, administered under Shōwa‑era hierarchy, where non‑Japanese residents possess limited rights and organisations such as the Yakuza exert influence. Eastern and Midwestern North America form the Greater Nazi Reich, ruled from New York City under an aging Adolf Hitler, with continued persecution of minorities and speculative 1960s technologies integrated into daily life.
The Neutral Zone functions as an ungoverned buffer territory used by resistance groups and infiltrated by both German and Japanese intelligence. Central to the narrative are the films collected by the Man in the High Castle, depicting alternate timelines—including worlds where the Allies prevailed, providing a thematic exploration of divergent histories.
