Summary

In an alternate historical timeline, the year is November 1941, nine months after Nazi Germany has successfully invaded and occupied Britain. Winston Churchill has been executed, and King George VI is held in captivity, having not appeared publicly for an extended period. His wife, Queen Elizabeth, and their daughters, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, have escaped abroad. A British government‑in‑exile, led by Rear‑Admiral Conolly, operates without formal recognition from the United States. Germany has also preserved cordial relations with the Soviet Union, and Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov arrives in Britain to supervise the transfer of Karl Marx’s remains to Soviet custody.

Within occupied London, Douglas Archer, a highly regarded Detective Superintendent in Scotland Yard’s murder squad, works under the authority of a German superior from the Schutzstaffel (SS) Security Service, the intelligence arm of the Nazi Party. Although Archer’s wife was killed during the Blitz, he avoids political entanglements and considers resistance efforts futile. His routine investigation into a homicide becomes politically charged when evidence suggests involvement by members of the British Resistance. An assertive SS officer soon assumes control of the case, which attracts German interest because the victim may have possessed information related to the German Army’s atomic weapons programme. Archer subsequently discovers that his secretary and lover, Sylvia Manning, is affiliated with the Resistance, drawing him unwillingly into a conspiracy against the occupying authorities.
