Summary

Jo Tiegan, a schoolgirl in 1995, acquires an antique mirror that establishes a temporal link with Louisa Iredale, who lives in the same house in 1919. The mirror enables each girl to see and visit the other’s era when it is positioned identically across both periods. Their immediate rapport develops into a close friendship that anchors the unfolding events.

A toxic‑waste accident at Jo’s school in 1995 is traced to a container dated 1919, prompting Jo to fear that her time‑travel activities may have influenced the circumstances leading to the incident. She and Louisa attempt to locate and relocate the container in 1919 to prevent the future disaster. Their search brings them into contact with Nicholas, a Russian boy held by Sir Ivor Creevy‑Thorne. Through Jo’s modern encyclopaedia, Nicholas learns that he is Alexei Nikolaevich, the Tsarevich of Russia, and that his family has been executed. Sir Ivor is revealed to have kidnapped him with the intention of selling him to Bolshevik agents.

Romantic attachments develop between Jo and Nicholas, and between Louisa and Jo’s friend Tama, who assists in obtaining a neutralising agent in 1995. Nicholas neutralises the waste in 1919, though it remains hazardous until 1995. He retrieves his signet ring in 1995 but cannot return to 1919 with it because the ring already exists there. Faced with choosing between returning without proof of identity or remaining in 1995, he elects to stay with Jo.
