Summary
Matteo Domingo is an extra-terrestrial being who arrived in the Philippines during the 16th century, in the period of Spanish colonial rule. His descent to Earth occurs when he intervenes to prevent a teenage girl, Marcella, from falling from a cliff. This act causes him to miss his scheduled return aboard the KMT 184.5 comet, leaving him stranded on the planet for more than four centuries. Matteo is depicted as possessing an idealised humanoid form and enhanced physical abilities, including heightened vision, hearing, and speed. His prolonged isolation from his home world contributes to a caustic and jaded perspective on human behaviour. Because he does not age, Matteo is compelled to adopt a new identity approximately every decade to avoid detection.
In the contemporary narrative, Matteo assumes the identity of a university professor. With only three months remaining before his anticipated departure back to his home planet, he encounters Steffi Chavez, a confident and widely recognised Filipino celebrity who unexpectedly becomes his neighbour in an adjacent condominium. Gradually, Matteo becomes entangled in the chaotic circumstances surrounding Steffi’s life and observes that she closely resembles Marcella, the young woman he once protected and loved in the 1500s. Although he attempts to maintain emotional distance in anticipation of his imminent departure, he repeatedly finds himself unable to detach from her, creating the central tension of the story.
