Summary
Tatsuo Ishibashi is portrayed as an impoverished, aspiring private investigator who struggles to secure employment in contemporary Tokyo. His circumstances become increasingly complicated following the inexplicable appearance of a woolly mammoth in the city. Tatsuo alone appears able to perceive an exact double of himself dressed in attire from a distant historical period, raising the possibility that he is witnessing a manifestation of one of his own ancestors.
Accompanied by Mari Takase, a bewildered college student drawn into his predicament, Tatsuo is soon taken into custody by the Time Patrol, an enforcement agency tasked with preventing temporal criminals from disrupting the space‑time continuum. Operating inconspicuously from an office in central Tokyo, the organization inducts Tatsuo and Mari as associate members. Their initial assignments involve travel to the Edo period, facilitated by the agency’s limited but functional temporal technology.
The pair are subsequently required to investigate the origins of Ultoreman, a superhero figure clearly modelled on Ultraman. Although regarded as a fictional comic‑book creation, Ultoreman appears to have been inspired by fugitives from the twenty‑fourth century whose activities have left tangible traces in the past. As events progress, Tatsuo uncovers the source of the cosmic rays emanating from the future and striking the Earth, ultimately learning that he holds a pivotal role in the unfolding temporal crisis.
