Summary
A ten‑episode continuation of Exploits of Elaine, the (released in December 1914), the serial again features Pearl White as Elaine and Arnold Daly as the scientific detective Craig Kennedy. Kennedy is repeatedly required to rescue the determined yet frequently imperilled Elaine from the schemes of Wu Fang, who seeks the treasure of the Clutching Hand , the antagonist of the earlier serial , and finds his efforts obstructed by Elaine and Kennedy at every turn. Fang’s attempts to eliminate them are consistently thwarted by Kennedy’s use of an array of scientific devices, including a primitive computer, a sphygmograph functioning as a lie‑detector, and various communication instruments.
The serial incorporates numerous adventure elements, including secret passageways, a mysterious ring, the explosive trodite, a chair prone to spontaneous combustion, and a new torpedo design. Its climax places Kennedy and Fang in shark‑infested waters; Fang’s partially devoured body is later recovered, while Kennedy’s fate remains unknown, setting the stage for the subsequent instalment, Romance of Elaine, the (1915).
