Summary
The early instalments followed a structure similar to Target Luna, featuring Professor Wedgwood’s adventurous son Jimmy and his pet hamster, Hamlet, who once again undertook a rocket flight to the Moon. In this iteration, Jimmy was accompanied by his brother, sister, and father, and the mission culminated in an actual lunar landing. Subsequent serials expanded the scope of the narrative, introducing additional characters, new destinations, and more elaborate production design. At Teddington Studios, designer David Gillespie constructed a Martian landscape using foam plastic to simulate lichen, quicksand, and other extra-terrestrial terrain. For Pathfinders in Space, Canadian designer Tom Spaulding created an alien spacecraft composed entirely of triangular forms, extending the motif to the light fittings and seating.
New cast members included Gerald Flood as science correspondent and dependable protagonist Conway Henderson; Pamela Barney as lunar enthusiast Professor Mary Meadows; George Coulouris as Harcourt Brown, a zealot convinced of extra-terrestrial life; and Graydon Gould, known for voicing Mike Mercury in Supercar , as American astronaut Captain Wilson.
