Summary

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set nearly 50 years after the events of the original series, during the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1930s. The series takes place in Los Angeles in 1938, a period characterised by Mexican-American folklore, social tensions, and racial conflict.

The narrative centres on a supernatural conflict between Santa Muerte, a deity associated with death who serves as a caretaker of the dead and guide to the afterlife, and her spiritual sister, Magda, a demon who believes that humanity is inherently evil and seeks to demonstrate this conviction through human actions and conflict.

The story follows Detective Tiago Vega and his partner, veteran Detective Lewis Michener, as they investigate a gruesome murder. Their investigation draws them into both the historical and contemporary conflicts of Los Angeles, where racial tensions, the growing threat of war, and Nazi activity and conspiracies increasingly complicate their efforts.
