Summary

Pennyworth chronicles the formative years of Alfred Pennyworth, long before his later service to the Wayne family. A former operative of the British Special Air Service, Alfred establishes a private security firm in an alternate‑history London that blends mid‑1960s aesthetics with dystopian elements. This setting incorporates invented political turmoil and authoritarian practices reminiscent of V for Vendetta, including a modern civil conflict and state‑sanctioned televised executions.

Across the first two seasons, Alfred becomes entangled in a power struggle between rival factions seeking control of the British government. He is targeted by the fascist Raven Society, whose ambitions place him in alliance with American operatives of the CIA‑affiliated No Name League. Through this conflict, Alfred encounters Thomas Wayne and Martha Kane, whose involvement foreshadows their future significance in Gotham City. The second‑season finale introduces the birth of their first child, Samantha Thomas Wayne, later depicted as Bruce Wayne’s older, long‑lost sister.
