Summary

Sapphire and Steel centres on a specialised pair of operatives tasked with confronting disturbances in the fabric of time. As Sapphire explains in the opening episode, time is a corridor… Once in a while Time itself can try to enter into the present, break in, burst through, to take things… to take people. Their role is to identify and contain these incursions, sealing breaches in the temporal continuum and neutralising the malevolent forces responsible.

The series emphasises atmospheric tension rather than technological spectacle, relying on sustained suspense, confined and theatrical settings, and the use of sound design, lighting, and evocative music to convey a pervasive sense of unease.

The principal figures in this paranormal investigative unit are Sapphire, portrayed by Joanna Lumley, a blue‑clad psychic described by one critic as the head girl of the universe, and Steel, played by David McCallum, a reserved and analytical character endowed with immense strength and resistance to temporal flow. Additional operatives appear intermittently, including Silver, a technically adept but mild‑mannered specialist, and Lead, a physically formidable figure.
