Summary
Star Trek: Discovery is set approximately a decade before the events of Star Trek and follows Commander Michael Burnham, whose early actions inadvertently ignite a major conflict between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. Court‑martialled and stripped of rank, Burnham is assigned to the experimental star-ship USS Discovery, notable for its spore‑drive propulsion system that enables instantaneous travel via the mycelial network. Over the course of the first season, the Discovery becomes central to ending the Klingon War, including a significant mission within the Mirror Universe.
In the second season, the crew investigates seven enigmatic red signals and a mysterious temporal figure known as the Red Angel, ultimately confronting a rogue artificial intelligence whose actions threaten all sentient life. This crisis culminates in the Discovery travelling more than nine centuries into the future, arriving in the 32nd century.
In this future era, the Federation has become fragmented following a galaxy‑wide disaster known as the Burn, which destabilised warp travel. Discovery’s crew works to uncover the origins of the catastrophe during the third season, after which Burnham is promoted to captain. The fourth season centres on efforts to rebuild the Federation while confronting a destructive extragalactic anomaly created by an unknown species. In the fifth season, Discovery undertakes a galaxy‑spanning search for an ancient and powerful artefact, pursued by multiple rival factions.
