Summary
The programme’s host, Starstrider, a spacefaring being from the planet Ulphrates III engaged in a quest to identify intelligent life, was portrayed by Roger Sloman in the first series and by Jim Carter in the second. Actor Sylvester McCoy, later known for his tenure on Doctor Who, appeared throughout both series as Starstrider’s ineffectual assistant, Wart. Each episode opened with the pair greeting the competing teams with the customary phrase, “Hello and welcome,” and concluded with their equally familiar farewell, “Goodbye and farewell.”
Across the run of the programme, three teams, each composed of four pupils drawn from schools across the United Kingdom, competed in a sequence of five rounds. The victorious school received a set of encyclopaedias along with Galactic Federation membership badges as recognition of their achievement.
