Summary
They Came from Outer Space is a comedy‑adventure television series characterised by a light‑hearted tone reminiscent of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures. Rather than following time‑travelling high‑school students, the programme centres on two teenage wanderers who traverse the western United States in a red Corvette, an automobile they assembled from salvaged junkyard parts, while pursuing leisure, companionship, and romantic encounters.
The protagonists, Bo and Abe, are distinguished by the fact that they are extra-terrestrial , illegal aliens from the planet Crouton. Their parents, seeking to provide them with a formal education, originally sent them to Cambridge University on Earth. During their journey, however, Bo and Abe decide to abandon their academic plans in favour of travelling to California to pursue a carefree lifestyle.
After their spacecraft is sighted, the pair become fugitives pursued by two inept United States Air Force officers, Colonel Barker and Lt. Wilson, who are determined to prevent the Croutonians from contaminating the human gene pool. Bo and Abe’s parents intermittently appear via an intergalactic video‑communication device to monitor their sons’ supposed academic progress at Cambridge.
As is typical of comedic extra-terrestrial characters in television, Bo and Abe possess a range of unusual abilities. These include object transference, enabling two inanimate objects to exchange positions, and possession, allowing temporary control of an object. They also exhibit voracious appetites, the capacity to communicate with animals, and contrasting personal luck, Abe being exceptionally fortunate, Bo notably unlucky. Their most distinctive trait is a shared sensory link that causes each to experience the other’s pain and pleasure. This ability frequently frustrates Bo, who is more successful romantically, as Abe involuntarily shares in the pleasurable consequences.
