Summary
The Third Eye was a science‑fiction anthology broadcast on Nickelodeon, premiering on 8 January 1983. Each instalment was preceded by a content advisory noting that the programme might contain startling scenes and was intended for older children. The introductory sequence featured narration by Don LaFontaine, who characterised the series as focusing on individuals possessing extraordinary perceptive abilities, described metaphorically as “seeing with the third eye.”
The anthology initially comprised three imported serials: Into the Labyrinth, The Haunting of Cassie Palmer, and Under the Mountain. In April 1983, the line‑up was expanded with Children of the Stones, followed later by a fifth and final addition, The Witches and the Grinnygog. Nickelodeon president Geraldine Laybourne later described the programme’s placement within the network’s schedule as part of a confusing “checkerboard” arrangement, noting that the series was ultimately withdrawn as Nickelodeon shifted its focus toward developing original productions.
In 1984, film historian Aljean Harmetz observed that Nickelodeon had acquired the rights to these serials inexpensively, attributing their low cost to modest production values and the presence of foreign accents among the cast, factors she argued made the material less attractive to other American broadcasters.
