Summary
Set roughly a century before the events of Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows Ser Duncan the Tall, commonly known as Dunk, a humble hedge knight who sets out across Westeros after the death of his mentor, Ser Arlan of Pennytree. Determined to forge his own path, Dunk travels to the great tournament at Ashford Meadow in search of opportunity, honour, and recognition. During his journey, he encounters a mysterious and headstrong boy named Egg, who insists on becoming his squire, beginning a partnership that will shape both of their destinies.
As Dunk and Egg become increasingly involved in the affairs of the realm, they find themselves navigating the complex political landscape of the Seven Kingdoms during the reign of the Targaryen dynasty. Although Westeros is enjoying a period of relative peace, tensions simmer beneath the surface among noble houses and members of the royal family. Through tournaments, rivalries, and encounters with influential lords and princes, Dunk's strong sense of justice frequently places him at odds with those who wield greater power and privilege.
The series explores themes of chivalry, loyalty, and social class through the evolving relationship between the idealistic knight and his young squire, who is later revealed to possess an extraordinary royal heritage. As they journey across Westeros, the pair become embroiled in conflicts that test their courage and integrity while exposing them to the ambitions and rivalries that shape the realm's future. Their adventures provide a more intimate perspective on the history of Westeros, depicting an era when the Targaryens still sat upon the Iron Throne and the memory of dragons had not yet faded from the world.
