Summary

House of the Dragon is set nearly two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones and chronicles the decline of House Targaryen at the height of its power in Westeros. The series begins during the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen, whose decision to name his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, as heir to the Iron Throne creates divisions within the royal court. Although many nobles swear allegiance to Rhaenyra, opposition emerges after Viserys remarries and fathers additional children, leading to a growing dispute over the succession.

As political tensions intensify, rival factions form around Rhaenyra and her former friend Alicent Hightower, the queen and mother of Prince Aegon. Long-standing personal grievances, court intrigue, and competing claims to the throne deepen the conflict within the Targaryen dynasty. Following Viserys's death, the succession crisis erupts when Aegon is crowned king by his supporters, despite the late king's previous designation of Rhaenyra as heir. The kingdom becomes divided between the rival claimants, each commanding powerful allies, armies, and dragons.

The struggle for the Iron Throne escalates into a devastating civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. As both sides seek to secure strategic advantages across Westeros, battles, betrayals, and shifting political alliances result in significant losses for the competing factions. The conflict not only threatens the stability of the Seven Kingdoms but also accelerates the decline of House Targaryen's dominance, as the war's destructive consequences leave lasting scars on the realm and weaken the dynasty's control over its dragons and its future.
