Summary
The series adopts a direct premise. After escaping the robotic Cylon race that annihilated the Twelve Colonies at the outset of the original programme, the Battlestar fleet arrives at Earth following a thirty‑year journey, still pursued by their adversaries. Initial elation at locating the home of the long‑lost Thirteenth Tribe quickly gives way to disappointment when the Galacticans discover that Earth’s technological development is insufficient to aid in resisting the Cylon threat. To prevent the planet from being exposed to the Cylons, the fleet resolves to accelerate Earth’s scientific progress. A secondary narrative follows a group of Galactican children living covertly on Earth, while an Air Force colonel attempts to prove their extraterrestrial origins. A brief resurgence of Cylon activity occurs before the series concludes.
Lorne Greene reprises his role as Commander Adama, the paternal leader of the Galactica. New principal characters include Kent McCord as Troy, Adama’s adult grandson, depicted as calm and disciplined, and Barry Van Dyke as Dillon, his more impulsive counterpart. The Earth‑based storyline introduces Jamie Hamilton (Robyn Douglass), a television reporter who becomes the only Earth native to travel aboard the Galactica. Antagonistic roles are filled first by Richard Lynch and later by Jeremy Brett, portraying the renegade Xavier. The fleet’s strategic initiatives are guided by Dr. Zee, a prodigious fourteen‑year‑old whose origins are revealed in the final episode.
