Summary
The pilgrimage undertaken by the Tang‑dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang is regarded as one of the most celebrated religious expeditions in Chinese history. Determined to obtain authoritative Buddhist scriptures, he travelled from China to the Western Regions, a term encompassing Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. His journey, marked by extensive hardship, political obstacles, and numerous physical trials, culminated in his successful return to China with a substantial corpus of sacred texts that would profoundly influence East Asian Buddhism.
