Summary
The series centres on K.I.T.T. (Knight Industries Two Thousand), a heavily modified black Pontiac Trans Am engineered as an advanced, autonomous crime‑fighting vehicle. Equipped with a molecular‑bonded shell that renders its exterior virtually indestructible, K.I.T.T. is impervious to gunfire, collisions, and most forms of physical damage. Its capabilities include sustained speeds approaching 300 miles per hour, fully independent self‑navigation, an array of onboard defensive and offensive systems, and limited amphibious and aerial functionality. Most distinctive, however, is K.I.T.T.’s sophisticated artificial intelligence, which grants the vehicle a defined personality and the ability to converse naturally with its operator.
The human protagonist, Michael Knight, portrayed by David Hasselhoff, serves as K.I.T.T.’s driver and field agent. Formerly an undercover police officer named Michael Long, he was critically injured when shot in the face during an assignment and left for dead. He was rescued by Wilton Knight, a terminally ill industrialist and founder of Knight Industries and the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG). Knight arranged for reconstructive surgery that gave Long a new identity, Michael Knight, modelled after Knight’s deceased son, and offered him the opportunity to continue the fight against criminals who operated beyond the reach of conventional law enforcement. Michael accepted, becoming FLAG’s principal field operative with K.I.T.T. as his partner.
Following Wilton Knight’s death, administrative leadership of FLAG passed to Devon Miles, who served as Michael’s superior and mission coordinator. Technical maintenance and development of K.I.T.T. were undertaken by Bonnie Barstow and later April Curtis, both of whom were responsible for the vehicle’s continual upgrades. In the final season, the team was joined by RC3, a street‑wise mechanic who provided additional support in field operations.
