Summary
A global food crisis emerges following a sharp rise in grain prices, driven by the diversion of crops to biofuel production and widespread agricultural failures linked to climate change and global warming. Japan, heavily dependent on imported staple crops, faces the prospect of severe nationwide starvation within six months should imports cease. While the government conceals the gravity of the situation, it simultaneously investigates potential technological and agricultural breakthroughs.
At this time, agricultural scientist Suzuki Mamoru announces the successful development of a genetically engineered maize variety capable of growing at four times the normal rate. After seven years of research conducted in isolation in a remote mountain laboratory, Suzuki designates the new strain God Corn. Meanwhile, detective Yagisawa Shuko becomes suspicious of a burned body discovered on a riverbank and begins treating the case as a homicide rather than an accident or suicide.
News of “God Corn” prompts intense interest from government officials seeking control of the technology, as well as from investment groups eager to exploit its commercial potential. Although Suzuki’s work is motivated by a desire to alleviate global hunger, he soon finds himself entangled in a complex web of political ambition, economic competition, and personal intrigue. The emergence of God Corn raises fundamental questions about whether this innovation will safeguard humanity’s future or unleash unforeseen consequences akin to opening a new Pandora’s box.
