Summary
A covert scientific consortium identifies the location of the legendary city of Atlantis, determining that it lies not on Earth but within the distant Pegasus Galaxy. Stargate Atlantis, a spin‑off of the successful series Stargate SG-1, chronicles the mission of a multinational expedition composed of scientific and military personnel. Led by diplomat Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson), the team undertakes a one‑way journey through the Stargate to reach Atlantis. Their objective is to investigate the city, now understood to have been constructed by an advanced ancient civilisation, and to return any discoveries to Earth. The expedition departs with no capacity for recall, rescue, or external support unless they can locate technology within Atlantis capable of enabling a return journey.
Upon arrival, the team finds Atlantis deserted and dormant, having remained inactive for tens of thousands of years. Its power reserves are depleted, leaving the expedition without the means to return home. To avoid permanent isolation, they must locate a new power source somewhere within the Pegasus Galaxy, accessible through the region’s network of Stargates. During their first off‑world mission, the team inadvertently awakens the Wraith, a predatory species and one of the most formidable adversaries humanity has ever encountered. The Wraith feed on human life, rendering them an existential threat to both the expedition and the galaxy’s human populations.
The series follows the principal field team led by Major John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan). His unit includes his second‑in‑command, Lieutenant Aiden Ford (Rainbow Sun Francks), and astrophysicist Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett), who reprises his role from Stargate SG‑1. They are joined by Teyla Emmagan (Rachel Luttrell), a strong‑willed and culturally significant leader from the Pegasus Galaxy. Together, they undertake exploratory missions, defend Atlantis from external threats, and confront the growing danger posed by the Wraith.
