Summary
The narrative of Stargate SG‑1 resumes one year after the events depicted in the original 1994 feature film, continuing the exploration of the Stargate universe through the activities of SG‑1, a United States Air Force special operations unit. Operating from Stargate Command (SGC), a classified military installation located within the underground Cheyenne Mountain Complex near Colorado Springs, the SG teams utilise an ancient extra-terrestrial device known as the Stargate to travel instantaneously to distant worlds.
SG‑1, along with numerous other SG units, is tasked with surveying alien planets, acquiring advanced technologies, and establishing alliances capable of safeguarding Earth from hostile extra-terrestrial powers. Principal adversaries include the Goa’uld, a parasitic serpent‑like species originating from P3X‑888 that subjugates human hosts; the self‑replicating mechanical Replicators; and the fanatical ascended beings known as the Ori.
According to the series’ mythological framework, the Goa’uld transported human populations from Earth to numerous habitable planets millennia ago, subsequently adopting the guise of deities from ancient terrestrial cultures, most prominently those of Ancient Egypt. The programme further incorporates elements from Greek, Roman, and Norse mythology, as well as Arthurian legend, to expand its cosmology.
Over the course of their missions, SG‑1 uncovers evidence that a highly advanced, human‑like species known as the Ancients constructed the Stargate network millions of years earlier. Having later achieved ascension to a higher plane of existence, the Ancients observe a strict policy of non‑interference in the affairs of corporeal beings, a principle that shapes many of the series’ overarching conflicts.
